Brixen

The cultural and congress city of Brixen is the most ancient city of South Tyrol and offers a lot of cultural and historical attractions. The city is mentioned for the first time in 901 and was a diocesan city from the X. century to 1964; in Brixen you will encounter testimonies of an eventful history. Gothic strength, Renaissance harmony and Baroque splendour decorate the house fronts. The city centre is characterised by width portici and restaurants. A short little alley connects via dei Portici Minore with the cathedral's square that builds, with the parish church and the adjacent cloister, the monumental centre of Brixen. The white lamb, symbol of the city, adorns the millennium column in front of the prince bishop's castle with a diocesan and a cribs museum. After this historical and cultural tour, you can enjoy shopping in one of the numerous stores in the pedestrian area. In the east of Brixen, after the museum of pharmacy that shows the history of pharmacy of the last 400 years, the Eagles' Bridge over the Eisack river brings you to the oldest part of Brixen, to Stufels, where, between winded alleys and cellar restaurants, you find the best cabaret places of Brixen. After visiting the city the mountains nearby are worth an excursion. The Plose is the local mountain of Brixen from which you can admire the most beautiful panorama over the valley. You can go hiking or skiing in St. Andrä or going by car to Kreuztal where you have a spacious skiing area in the winter and well signed hiking paths in the summer
